Ireland Beat India by 34 Runs in 1st T20I to Take Early Series Lead

Ireland defeats India in thrilling T20I

Ireland opened the India Tour of Ireland 2026 with an impressive victory, defeating India by 34 runs in the first T20 International at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast. The home side delivered a disciplined performance in every department to earn a deserved win and move 1-0 ahead in the two-match series.

After being asked to bat, Ireland recovered from an early setback and gradually built a competitive total. Captain Lorcan Tucker anchored the innings with a composed half-century, while Gareth Delany played an aggressive knock that shifted momentum in Ireland’s favour during the middle overs. Useful contributions from George Dockrell and Benjamin Calitz added valuable runs, helping the hosts finish on a challenging 182 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs.

India’s bowlers managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals, with Harshit Rana leading the attack through an impressive three-wicket spell. Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh also made important breakthroughs, but Ireland’s middle order ensured the innings finished on a strong note.

Chasing 183, India started aggressively as Abhishek Sharma attacked from the opening over and scored a rapid 49 from only 20 deliveries. However, once his innings ended, Ireland’s bowlers tightened their grip on the contest. Regular wickets prevented India from building lasting partnerships, leaving the visitors under constant scoreboard pressure.

Matthew Hollard delivered a match-winning bowling performance, consistently troubling India’s batting lineup with his accuracy and control. Supported well by Matthew Humphreys and Jai Moondra, Ireland maintained pressure throughout the chase and eventually bowled India out for 148 in 18.5 overs.

The victory gives Ireland a valuable 1-0 lead in the series and provides tremendous confidence ahead of the second T20I. India, meanwhile, will aim to regroup quickly and produce a stronger all-round performance in order to level the series.

The opening match showcased Ireland’s growing strength in international T20 cricket and provided local supporters with a memorable win against one of the world’s leading cricket nations.
