Suryakumar Yadav Urges India to Embrace Pressure Ahead of T20 World Cup Final vs New Zealand

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has urged his teammates to embrace the pressure ahead of the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India are aiming to create history by becoming the first team to retain the T20 World Cup title, win the tournament on home soil, and lift the trophy for a record third time.

India Face Huge Expectations at Home

To achieve that feat, India will have to overcome not only a strong New Zealand team but also the immense expectations of a cricket-loving nation of 1.4 billion fans.

Leading India in a home World Cup final is a special moment, Suryakumar said, as the team prepares for one of the biggest matches in modern T20 cricket.

“There are nerves, butterflies in the stomach, but as I always say – if there’s no pressure, there’s no fun,” Suryakumar told reporters ahead of the final.

“I’m very excited. All the boys and support staff are excited, and I’m sure all of India is excited for the game.”

Record Crowd Expected at Narendra Modi Stadium

More than 100,000 fans are expected to fill the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world.

The venue still holds memories of the 2023 ODI World Cup final, where Australia defeated India. Now, the home side has another opportunity to lift a major ICC trophy in front of their own supporters.

If successful, India would also become the first host nation to win the T20 World Cup.

Relaxed Dressing Room Key to India’s Success

Despite the pressure, Suryakumar said the team has maintained a relaxed environment inside the dressing room.

Players such as Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel help keep the atmosphere light with their personalities, which helps the team stay calm during tense moments.

“It’s very important to have such characters around,” Suryakumar said.

“When the situation is tight, you need someone to joke around in the bus or dressing room to calm everyone.”

Captain Encourages Freedom and Team Culture

Suryakumar also revealed that he avoids acting like a “big brother” in the dressing room, instead encouraging players to express themselves freely.

According to the Indian captain, team culture and a positive environment are essential for success at the highest level.

“A happy team atmosphere is the key,” he added.

“Give them freedom, listen to their ideas as well about what they feel. It’s important to understand what everyone wants in the team.”

Historic Opportunity for India

With history on the line, India now prepare for a blockbuster clash against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final, hoping to deliver a memorable victory for their fans.
