India Beat New Zealand by 96 Runs to Win T20 World Cup 2026 Final in Ahmedabad

The Indian cricket team created history by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

With the emphatic victory, India became the first nation to successfully defend the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title.

This triumph also marked India’s third T20 World Cup crown, making them the most successful team in tournament history, surpassing West Indies and England, who had previously won the title twice each.

India Post Record Total in T20 World Cup Final

Powered by Sanju Samson’s brilliant 46-ball 89, along with half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, India posted 255/5 in 20 overs — the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final.

New Zealand, chasing a daunting target, were bowled out for 159, with Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) and Axar Patel (3/27) leading India’s bowling attack.

Bumrah’s four-wicket haul also saw him finish the tournament as joint-highest wicket-taker with Varun Chakravarthy, both claiming 14 wickets in T20 World Cup 2026.

Explosive Start From Abhishek Sharma

After New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl, India began cautiously, scoring just 12 runs in the first two overs.

However, the momentum quickly shifted as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson launched an aggressive counterattack from the third over.

New Zealand bowlers Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson struggled to contain the Indian openers as India raced to 92/0 in the powerplay, equalling the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history.

Abhishek Sharma was the chief aggressor, reaching his half-century in just 18 balls, the fastest fifty of the tournament.

His explosive innings, featuring six fours and three sixes, ended in the eighth over when Rachin Ravindra induced an edge behind the wicket.

Samson and Kishan Dominate Middle Overs

The wicket failed to slow India’s momentum as Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan continued the assault.

Samson reached his third consecutive half-century of the tournament, bringing up his fifty in 33 balls, while Kishan smashed a 23-ball fifty as India crossed the 200-run mark in the 15th over.

Just when the partnership looked unstoppable, James Neesham struck twice in the 16th over, dismissing both set batters.

Samson departed after a magnificent 89 off 46 balls, the highest individual score in a T20 World Cup final, surpassing Marlon Samuels (2016) and Kane Williamson (2021) who had scored 85.

Kishan followed soon after, falling for 54 off 25 balls.

Neesham struck again in the same over as Suryakumar Yadav was caught off the final delivery, reducing India from 203/1 to 204/4.

Shivam Dube Finishes Strong

New Zealand tightened their bowling briefly as Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma struggled to find timing.

However, Shivam Dube reignited India’s momentum, smashing 24 runs in the final over off Neesham to push India to 255/5, the highest total in a T20 World Cup final.

Bumrah and Axar Lead India’s Bowling Charge

New Zealand received an early lifeline when Finn Allen was dropped in the opening over, but the missed chance did little damage.

Allen soon fell to Axar Patel, while Jasprit Bumrah removed Rachin Ravindra in the following over.

Axar then dismissed Glenn Phillips, leaving New Zealand struggling at 53/3 at the end of the powerplay.

Although Tim Seifert scored a quick 52, wickets kept falling regularly.

Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Seifert, while Axar returned to break a 52-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner.

Bumrah Seals Historic Victory

With 117 runs needed from the final five overs, New Zealand’s hopes faded quickly.

Bumrah delivered a devastating spell in the closing stages, picking up three more wickets, while Abhishek Sharma dismissed Jacob Duffy in the 19th over to complete a historic 96-run victory.

The win also marked India’s biggest T20 International victory by runs.
